Volunteer Botanicals is entering retail with Inner Wild, a four-SKU functional beverage line now available through liquor and spirits channels in Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia, alongside a direct-to-consumer e-commerce channel at drinkinnerwild.com. The Tennessee-based ingredient technology company is positioning the brand squarely against the sober-curious tailwind, as Gallup data shows U.S. drinking rates at a new low.
The launch marks Volunteer Botanicals' first consumer-facing brand, built on the company's proprietary Rapidose® platform, which converts botanical extracts into water-compatible microemulsions engineered for high bioavailability. All four SKUs use Blue Spring Living Water — a mineral-rich Tennessee spring source — as the liquid base, a formulation decision the brand is leaning on as a premium differentiator at shelf.
The Four-SKU Lineup
Each variety maps to a distinct consumption occasion, a shelf-merchandising strategy increasingly common in the better-for-you beverage set: Luminous Lion targets cognitive energy with lion's mane, cordyceps, and natural caffeine; Frisky Fox is a mood-and-performance blend featuring saffron, ashwagandha, and nitric oxide-supporting botanicals; Opulent Owl offers a calming profile via kava, blue lotus, and L-theanine; and Blissful Bear is a hemp-derived THC/CBG relaxation beverage, placing it in the fast-moving cannabis-infused beverage segment that retailers across the Southeast are still navigating from a planogram and compliance standpoint.
"Consumers are not simply looking for another beverage. They're looking for products that fit how they want to live," said Jason Pickle, president of Volunteer Botanicals. "People want sustained energy without the crash, ways to relax without alcohol, and functional ingredients they recognize and trust."
Category & Competitive Context
The functional beverage segment is one of the most crowded proving grounds in CPG right now, with brands ranging from Olipop and Poppi on the prebiotic soda side to Recess, Wynk, and Cann competing for the cannabis-adjacent wellness occasion. Industry analysts project the U.S. functional beverage market will approach $100 million over the next decade, driven by adaptogen, mushroom, botanical, and hemp-cannabinoid formulations. For retail buyers, the category presents real velocity upside but also significant slotting and planogram complexity — particularly for SKUs containing THC, which require age-gate compliance and often sit in segregated cooler sets or behind-the-counter displays in off-premise accounts.
The five-state Southeast liquor-channel entry is a deliberate go-to-market choice. Off-premise spirits and liquor retailers have become a natural proving ground for functional and cannabis-adjacent beverages, offering adult-use positioning without the regulatory friction of food-drug channels. Brands that build velocity and scan data in that environment often use it as leverage for broader grocery and mass-channel conversations. For Inner Wild, establishing TDP in its home region before pursuing national ACV expansion is a conventional but sound path for an emerging brand managing limited marketing spend.
The broader sober-curious movement is providing structural demand. As non-alcoholic beverage alternatives gain shelf space across grocery and specialty channels, functional ingredient stacking — combining adaptogens, nootropics, and cannabinoids in a single SKU — is emerging as a key point of differentiation over plain sparkling water or CBD-only formats. Inner Wild's use of Rapidose microemulsion technology is a direct answer to bioavailability criticism that has historically dogged functional beverage innovation in the natural and specialty channel.
