New Category Entry Targets Growing Condiment Segment
Tabañero, the Florida-based hot sauce maker, is expanding beyond its core product line with the launch of seven barbecue sauce varieties designed to compete on clean ingredients and reduced sugar content.
The new Tabañero BBQ Sauce collection features approximately half the sugar and calories of leading barbecue sauce brands while drawing on Southern, Caribbean, and Latin American culinary influences. All varieties are gluten-free, kosher, contain no high-fructose corn syrup, and are free from artificial preservatives and fillers. Pricing is set at $7.49 per 14.5-ounce bottle.
Targeting Shifting Consumer Preferences
"Today's consumers are reading ingredient labels more closely than ever, but they refuse to compromise on taste," said Traci Mishner, Vice President of Marketing & Trade Operations at Tabañero. "We saw an opportunity to reimagine barbecue sauce with cleaner ingredients, less sugar, and flavor combinations inspired by our Florida roots. The result is a collection that delivers everything people love about barbecue sauce while offering something entirely new."
The launch enters a category showing momentum. Hot sauce and barbecue sauce are the only major condiment categories currently growing at 4.2%, outpacing the 2.2% food-at-home inflation rate.
Flavor Portfolio
The seven varieties are:
- Original: Smoky and sweet with Florida orange citrus, positioned as a ketchup alternative for ribs, shredded pork, burgers, and fries.
- Everglades Gold: Southern-style mustard barbecue blended with Florida citrus, designed for chicken, pork, seafood, dipping, and spreads.
- Habanero Honey: Organic honey combined with habanero peppers for a hot honey finish sauce ideal for wings (vegan varieties excluded).
- Apple Hickory: Layers apple sweetness and subtle smoke for slow-cooked meats and ribs.
- Smoked Pepperoncini: Tangy pepperoncini peppers with light smoke and brightness, suited for chicken, sausages, and marinades.
- Bourbon Black Cherry: Rich cherry depth with subtle bourbon notes for pork, steak tips, and elevated weeknight dinners.
- XXX: Fuller-bodied intensity for consumers seeking bolder heat.
All varieties except Habanero Honey are vegan, and all are produced in the United States.
Retail Rollout Underway
Tabañero products are currently available in more than 8,500 stores nationwide. The new BBQ sauce line is now rolling out at select retailers including Hy-Vee, Rouses Markets, and Amazon, with additional locations expected.
Founded in 2011 by South Florida entrepreneur Carl DeSantis, Tabañero has built its reputation on flavor innovation and all-natural ingredients across its hot sauce portfolio.
Why It Matters
Operators and retailers tracking the condiment category should note Tabañero's entry signals continued bifurcation in barbecue sauce—traditional mainstream brands versus cleaner-label premium alternatives. The 4.2% growth in hot and barbecue sauces, coupled with consumer label scrutiny, indicates retailers stocking both conventional and better-for-you options may capture broader customer bases. The $7.49 price point positions Tabañero in the premium tier, competing on differentiation rather than value.
