Record Import Surge Reflects Growing UK Demand
UK imports of Italian canned tomato products hit an all-time high during the three-year period spanning 2023 to 2025, with an average annual value of £380.4 million and volume of 330,470 tonnes, according to data released by ANICAV, the Italian Association of Canned Vegetable Industries.
When factoring in all European Union sources, UK canned tomato imports climbed even higher, reaching an average yearly value of £549.3 million over the same period—approximately 480,000 tonnes annually, with a peak of 492,691 tonnes in a single year.
The trend shows no signs of slowing. UK imports of canned tomatoes from the EU are projected to reach £580 million in value and 510,000 tonnes in volume during 2026, according to the promotional campaign Red Gold from Europe.
Why the Growth?
Industry observers point to sustained foodservice adoption and consumer confidence in European quality standards. Giovanni De Angelis, ANICAV's General Director, attributed the gains to quality perception: "British consumers and food professionals confirm their enthusiasm for Italian and European canned tomatoes. From professional kitchens to everyday home cooking, canned tomatoes from Europe continue to inspire a wide range of dishes thanks to their premium quality, rich taste and natural nutritional benefits."
The Red Gold from Europe campaign, co-funded by the European Union, has promoted canned tomatoes as a versatile ingredient available in multiple formats—whole peeled, chopped, passata, cherry, and concentrate—all meeting EU safety and sustainability standards.
Market Context
The record volumes indicate strong operator confidence in supply reliability and pricing stability. For catering professionals managing food costs, the consistency of canned tomato products from established European producers offers predictability compared to fresh seasonal fluctuations.
Why It Matters
For F&B operators sourcing ingredients, this data underscores stable supply chains from European producers and validates the widespread adoption of canned tomatoes in professional kitchens—a staple that bridges cost efficiency with quality. The projected 2026 growth suggests continued competitive pricing despite import volumes, making it a reliable category for menu planning and procurement strategies.
