Sunshine Mills' Sportsman's Pride is retiring its 40lb Classic dog food bags in favor of a new 50lb format, a format shift the Red Bay, Alabama-based manufacturer says responds directly to retailer and consumer demand for larger, more value-oriented pack sizes. The brand's 26/18 Premium Complete & Balanced Dog Food is the first SKU to launch in the upgraded format, accompanied by a full packaging redesign intended to sharpen shelf visibility and simplify shopper navigation.

The Format Shift

The move from 40lb to 50lb aligns Sportsman's Pride with a broader trend in the pet food category toward club-pack and bulk-oriented sizing — a format that historically drives stronger turn rates among multi-dog households, hunting kennels, breeders, and trainers. Those segments represent the brand's core buyer, and the incremental 10 pounds per bag meaningfully reduces the per-feeding cost, a key purchase driver in a category where private label and value national brands compete heavily on price-per-pound.

Alan Bostick, Chief Executive Officer of Sunshine Mills, Inc., framed the decision as a direct response to shopper feedback. "Dog owners know what they want, and bigger bags are high on that list," Bostick said. "We're excited to introduce the new 50 pound bags, giving our customers more of the quality nutrition they've come to expect from Sportsman's Pride in a larger size they've been asking for."

Retail & Shelf Strategy

The refreshed packaging introduces bold imagery, prominent formula callouts, clearer life-stage identification, and recognizable category icons — elements retailers look for when evaluating whether a brand can anchor a planogram section or perform on an end-cap without heavy promotional support. A cohesive visual system across the lineup also reduces the shopper confusion that often costs brands velocity points when SKU proliferation muddies the shelf set.

Scott Merrill, Vice President of Sales for Sunshine Mills, Inc., pointed to strong early retailer interest in the larger format. "The combination of a 50 pound offering, refreshed packaging, and the reputation Sportsman's Pride has built over the years is something we're excited to bring to both existing and new retail partners," Merrill said. Sunshine Mills operates eight manufacturing facilities across seven states, giving the company the production scale to support broad distribution of the heavier SKU without lead-time constraints.

For grocery and farm-supply retailers, the 50lb format presents a floor-stack and pallet-display opportunity that smaller bags cannot match. Large bag pet food is a known traffic driver in rural and suburban trade areas, and the format upgrade could help Sportsman's Pride compete more directly against national-brand leaders in the sporting and performance dog food segment. Sunshine Mills also manufactures a wide portfolio of store-brand and private label pet food products, giving retail buyers familiar with the company's manufacturing capabilities added confidence in the Sportsman's Pride brand equity refresh.
