Sargento has acquired La Terra Fina, the premium dairy-based dips, spreads, and quiches brand, marking the Plymouth, Wis.-based cheese company's first strategic move into grocery and club deli departments. The deal, announced October 1, adds roughly 250 employees to Sargento's workforce and slots La Terra Fina into a newly formed Deli Business Unit — a third operating division alongside the company's existing Consumer Products and Food Service & Ingredients (FSI) segments.
Financial terms were not disclosed; both companies are privately held.
A New Deli Beachhead
For Sargento — which reports $1.7 billion in net sales and holds the No. 1 branded natural cheese position in the U.S. — the La Terra Fina acquisition is a lateral move into a high-velocity, high-margin deli perimeter category that has attracted steady consumer and retailer interest. Premium deli dips and spreads occupy some of the highest-turn real estate in grocery, performing strongly in both conventional supermarket deli cases and the growing club channel, where multi-pack and club-format SKUs command above-average basket rings. La Terra Fina, founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1983, has been a private affiliate of Catamount Management Corporation since 2015 and built its reputation on refrigerated dairy-based formats that index well against natural and specialty channel shoppers.
Louie Gentine, third-generation Chairman and CEO of Sargento, framed the deal as a category-expansion play: "Entering the Deli is an exciting opportunity for the Sargento Family, that expands our capabilities, builds on the strength of the La Terra Fina brand and brings new consumers to Sargento."
Leadership Restructured
The acquisition triggered a three-way leadership realignment across Sargento's business units. Erin Price has been named General Manager of the new Deli Business Unit, responsible for integrating La Terra Fina, building Sargento's deli strategy, and driving performance within the company's three-year rolling strategic plan. Price brings more than 20 years of CPG experience — including brand, integrated marketing, and strategic planning — and previously served as Sargento's GM of Consumer Products, Food Service & Ingredients and VP of Strategic Planning. La Terra Fina President and CEO Stephen Cottrell and the brand's existing leadership team will report to Price.
Jeremy Schellin steps into the GM role for Consumer Products, the business unit that markets Sargento's branded natural cheese slices, shreds, chunks, and snacks through grocery and retail channels nationwide. Schellin previously ran FSI, where he led the division to a record $500 million in net sales — a first in the unit's 40-year history. His background in innovation and brand management is a direct fit for a Consumer Products segment that has generated category growth through lines such as Balanced Breaks snacks and Sargento Natural American Cheese.
Joy Judski has been named Interim GM of Food Service & Ingredients while the company conducts a search for a permanent leader. Judski, who has more than 20 years of sales and trade strategy experience, will continue leading FSI Sales during the transition. She previously served as VP of Sales for Consumer Products.
What It Means for Retail
From a category-management standpoint, the acquisition signals that Sargento is positioning itself as a full deli perimeter player — not simply a packaged cheese brand. Retailers managing planogram space in refrigerated deli can expect Sargento to leverage its existing broker networks, DSD relationships, and retail partnerships to accelerate La Terra Fina's distribution footprint. The club channel opportunity is particularly notable: premium deli dips and quiches are consistent performers in club-format floor stacks and end-cap programs, and Sargento's established club-channel infrastructure could meaningfully expand La Terra Fina's TDP and ACV over the near term.
Chief Operating Officer Michael Pellegrino described the deal as "an important milestone and growth engine" that will strengthen Sargento's ability to deliver value for employees, customers, suppliers, and shareholders — language that telegraphs a measured integration cadence rather than an immediate SKU rationalization.
For the broader dairy and refrigerated category, the move underscores ongoing M&A appetite among family-owned CPG incumbents looking to extend shelf presence beyond their core segment without abandoning the premium positioning that defines their retail equity. Buyers and category managers tracking deli and refrigerated dips should expect Sargento to invest in trade promotion and shopper marketing programs to introduce La Terra Fina to its existing retail account base.
