The Launch
Reser's Fine Foods, the Beaverton, Ore.-based family-owned leader in refrigerated prepared foods, is rolling out a new High Protein Deli Salads line into the deli sections of major grocery retailers nationwide. The three-SKU lineup — Chicken Salad (15g of protein per serving), Tuna Salad (12g), and Egg Salad (11g) — extends Reser's existing deli portfolio and positions the brand squarely in the fast-growing functional refrigerated foods segment.
The innovation is built around a cottage cheese-based dressing, which Reser's chefs developed to deliver a creamy texture while achieving 25% more protein and 40–60% fewer calories compared to the brand's traditional deli salads. "People are looking for easy ways to add protein into their day and want something more interesting than another protein shake or chicken breast," said Megan Torres, senior brand strategy manager for Reser's. "It's an innovative take on classic deli favorites that meets what shoppers are looking for today."
The Consumer Signal
The launch is anchored by a Pollfish survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers aged 16–29, conducted in September 2026, that Reser's commissioned to quantify Gen Z's protein behavior. The data points are notable for category managers evaluating deli planogram resets: 50% of Gen Z respondents report eating more protein than they did two years ago, yet 95% say they want more variety in protein sources. Critically, 87% say they would prefer high-protein versions of familiar foods — a clear signal that innovation layered onto trusted formats has more velocity potential than entirely new entries. Three out of four Gen Z consumers self-identify as "Team Protein" over Team Carbs, and 63% say they are tired of repetitive protein options.
For retail buyers, those attitudinal numbers translate into a real merchandising opportunity in the refrigerated deli case, where prepared salads have historically skewed toward comfort and convenience rather than functional nutrition. High-protein positioning allows Reser's to defend shelf space against both national-brand competitors and the growing number of private-label programs retailers are building in the better-for-you deli segment.
Retail & Category Context
Reser's operates 14 manufacturing facilities across the U.S. and Mexico and employs more than 5,000 people, giving it the DSD-adjacent scale and retail relationships to execute a broad-based grocery rollout. The brand's existing deli footprint — which includes Deviled Egg Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, Cole Slaw, and a deep bench of side dishes — provides an established planogram position that new SKUs can leverage without requiring incremental slotting negotiations at most accounts.
The timing aligns with broader refrigerated category trends. Syndicated data has consistently shown that high-protein claims are among the fastest-growing better-for-you attributes in the perimeter, with brands like cottage cheese producers and Greek yogurt labels demonstrating that functional dairy-adjacent formats can command significant velocity lifts. Reser's cottage cheese dressing formulation essentially borrows that halo and applies it to a legacy deli format — a lower-risk innovation strategy that category teams at major chains should find easy to slot alongside existing prepared salad sets. With the line available now in-store, scan data from the holiday fourth quarter — a peak period for deli salad turns — will offer the first real read on whether the protein premium resonates at shelf.
