French condiment house Maille is entering the U.S. mayonnaise set with a four-SKU ultra-premium line available exclusively at Albertsons Companies banners—a distribution footprint spanning more than 2,000 doors across 36 states. The launch marks the brand's first foray into the mayo category stateside, extending a condiment portfolio built around Dijon mustards, vinegars, and cornichons that traces back to 1747.
All four varieties—Original, Dijonnaise, Spicy, and Truffle Mayonnaise—will retail at $7.99 MSRP for an 11-fl.-oz. jar, though shelf pricing will vary by banner and market. The Albertsons Companies exclusive covers the full portfolio of 15-plus regional banners, including Safeway, Jewel-Osco, Vons, Shaw's, Pavilions, ACME, Randalls, Star Market, Tom Thumb, and Balducci's, among others. The brand describes this as the first phase of a phased U.S. rollout, with broader retail distribution targeted for early 2027.
Category Positioning
At $7.99 for 11 fluid ounces, Maille is pricing well above the national-brand tier dominated by Hellmann's and Duke's, and above most private-label mayo SKUs that have captured shelf space through EDLP value positioning. The brand is instead targeting the premium and ultra-premium condiment segment—a lane that has seen accelerating velocity as consumers trade up in spreads and sauces even as they trade down in center-store staples. The play is less about competing for turn rate against high-volume commodity mayo and more about incrementality: a destination SKU on the condiment planogram that drives basket ring and banner differentiation.
Product differentiation is built into the formulation. All four SKUs use cage-free eggs and double the egg-yolk content relative to conventional mayo, yielding what the brand describes as a velvety, rich texture. The line is EDTA-free and carries no artificial preservatives, flavors, or colors—attributes that align with clean-label shopper demand and give retail buyers a clear on-shelf callout. The Truffle Mayonnaise, made with real truffle pieces, and the Spicy variety, built around Espelette chile rather than a generic cayenne base, are positioned as flavor-forward alternatives to the growing spicy-mayo segment driven largely by Asian-inspired cuisine trends.
Retail and Brand Strategy
Choosing Albertsons Companies as an exclusive launch partner gives Maille immediate national scale—36-state coverage—while the banner diversity (from premium Balducci's to value-oriented PAK'nSAVE) allows the brand to test velocity and in-store display performance across distinct shopper demographics before negotiating broader chain placement. An exclusive arrangement of this scope typically carries significant slotting and MCB commitments, and it signals Albertsons' interest in differentiating its condiment set with European heritage brands at a moment when grocery retail is under pressure to justify premium SKU allocation against private-label expansion.
"When it comes to delicious and indulgent food, the French know best—and that is no different when it comes to their mayo," said Brandon Collins, Maille's Mustard Sommelier and Executive Corporate Chef for Unilever. "When we set out to develop Maille's first mayonnaise line available in the US, we knew we wanted to bring that simple, rich indulgence home to shoppers' kitchens."
With Unilever's distribution infrastructure behind it, Maille has the supply-chain capability to scale quickly into mass and natural/specialty channels once the Albertsons exclusivity window closes. The 2027 expansion timeline suggests a roughly 12-to-18-month exclusivity runway—enough scan data to make a compelling sell-in case to additional retail buyers across grocery, club, and specialty channels.
