Two Moves, One Season

Land O'Lakes is doubling down on the back-to-school dairy window with a two-front retail push: a new snack cheese line landing in Northeast grocery chains and a dairy-case distribution expansion for its flagship Deli American product into select Kroger stores across the U.S. Together, the moves signal a deliberate play to capture incremental TDP gains in both the portioned snack cheese and pre-sliced processed cheese segments heading into fall.

The new Land O Lakes® Snack Cheese Cubes ($5.99 MSRP) hit shelves in three flavors — Colby Jack, Pepper Jack, and Extra Sharp White Cheddar — at Stop & Shop, Price Chopper, Giant, and additional Northeast banners. Each package contains eight individually wrapped 1-ounce cube packs, a format tuned for lunchbox pull-through and afterschool velocity. The single-serve structure positions the SKUs squarely against the portable snack cheese segment, where turn rates on individually wrapped formats have steadily outpaced block and shredded varieties in recent scan cycles.

Kroger Dairy-Case Play

Simultaneously, Land O'Lakes is routing its Deli American ($4.49 MSRP) — which holds the No. 1 Deli American title based on L52W sales data through July 12, 2026 — out of the service deli and into the self-service dairy case at select Kroger locations. The pre-sliced, packaged format removes the deli-counter friction point entirely, competing directly with national-brand and private-label processed cheese slices already entrenched in the refrigerated aisle planogram. For Kroger, the addition diversifies the dairy cheese set with a product carrying existing consumer equity; for Land O'Lakes, it opens a distribution channel that can scale without the slotting constraints tied to staffed deli departments.

Heather Anfang, EVP and President of Dairy Foods at Land O'Lakes, framed the dual launch around convenience convergence: "As consumers increasingly seek convenient, high-quality foods that fit today's busy lifestyles, we're focused on delivering products that make every eating occasion more enjoyable." The commentary tracks with broader dairy category trends, where pre-portioned, grab-and-go formats continue to command premium price points and favorable velocity metrics versus commodity block formats.

Category and Competitive Context

The portioned snack cheese segment has attracted sustained investment from major dairy manufacturers as households seek higher-protein, low-prep snacking options. Individual cube and stick formats have shown resilience against private-label encroachment, largely because branded operators like Land O'Lakes can command a quality narrative and flavor breadth that own-brand programs have been slower to replicate at retail. Launching three distinct flavor profiles at launch — including the trending Pepper Jack and Extra Sharp White Cheddar — gives Land O'Lakes meaningful adjacency to the specialty cheese consumer without requiring a step outside the mainstream dairy aisle.

The cooperative's reach — more than 1,000 dairy producer members across all 50 states — gives its supply chain credibility that resonates with retailers managing sourcing transparency conversations. As a Food & Beverage Magazine network publication, Grocery CPG will continue tracking ACV build and velocity performance for both SKU sets as syndicated data becomes available.
