King Arthur Baking Company is expanding its physical footprint with a permanent store and baking school in Alexandria, Virginia's Old Town neighborhood. The location at 617 King Street will open this fall and represents the brand's first combined retail and baking education facility outside of Vermont.
Retail and Educational Hub The store will stock baking essentials, ingredients, mixes, tools, accessories, and kitchen appliances alongside a dedicated baking school and event space. The company plans to offer classes, birthday parties, private events, and community gatherings from the location.
Building on Pop-Up Success The permanent Alexandria store follows King Arthur's strategy of testing markets through temporary locations. The brand opened a pop-up in Fairfax in 2024 (closed June 2024), followed by a Bethesda pop-up that launched last summer and closed in January 2025. Both locations generated customer interest that prompted the company to commit to a permanent presence in the region. King Arthur is also expanding its temporary retail footprint in 2025, with pop-ups scheduled in Denver and Boulder, among other markets. The company's Bake Truck will tour Fairfax this summer and visit Old Town during the store opening.
Why It Matters
The move signals King Arthur's shift toward experiential retail and direct-to-consumer education as a growth strategy. By combining product sales with hands-on baking classes and event hosting, the company is creating a destination that extends beyond traditional retail, a model that appeals to both hobbyists and professional bakers seeking community and expertise.
