Happy® Products is bringing a Marvel Studios co-branded ready-to-drink coffee line to grocery shelves nationwide, leveraging the theatrical release of Avengers: Doomsday — in theaters December 18 — to drive incremental velocity and trial across the RTD coffee category. The eight-SKU collector's series marks one of the more expansive licensed-packaging plays in the RTD segment this year, touching grocery, mass, drug, and e-commerce doors simultaneously.
Co-founded by Craig Dubitsky and actor Robert Downey Jr. — who also stars in Avengers: Doomsday as Doctor Doom — Happy® Products is deploying the promotion across all Albertsons banners, Kroger stores, HEB, Raley's Supermarkets, Schnucks, pOpshelf, Sheetz, select CVS and Target locations, and Amazon. The multi-banner footprint signals meaningful ACV expansion for the brand and positions the line for high-visibility in-store displays ahead of the holiday moviegoing season.
The Product Mix
The collector's series spans four of Happy's core RTD SKUs — classic cold brew, Tahitian vanilla cold brew, vanilla latte, and chocolatey chip latte — packaged in 11-oz cans printed with high-resolution tactile graphics. Each can features one of eight Marvel Cinematic Universe characters: Black Panther, Captain America, Gambit, Mister Fantastic, Mystique, The Thing, Thor, and Doctor Doom. The collectible format is a deliberate mechanic to encourage repeat purchase and pantry-loading behavior, a strategy that has proven effective for limited-edition packaging runs in the beer and soft drink categories. Availability and specific can designs vary by retailer, a common approach to drive banner-exclusive traffic.
Why Retailers Are Leaning In
Licensed entertainment tie-ins have historically delivered above-average turns during theatrical windows, particularly when the IP carries broad demographic reach. Avengers: Doomsday — directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and featuring one of the largest ensemble casts in MCU history — checks that box. "When the stakes are this high, every hero needs the right fuel," said Holly Frank, VP of Global Marketing Partnerships & Promotions at Disney. "Happy is giving fans a fun way to get charged up and ready for their next adventure." For category managers, that translates to a clear end-cap and secondary-placement story heading into Q4, when RTD coffee competes for gondola real estate against seasonal beverages.
The RTD coffee segment has been one of the more dynamic growth corridors tracked by syndicated data providers, with premium and functional cold brew driving much of the incremental TDP gains over the past 24 months. Happy's positioning — thoughtfully sourced blends, premium design, and a NAMI mental-health partnership — targets the better-for-you consumer most likely to trade up from private label or commodity cold brew. Adding a blockbuster-scale licensed property lowers the trial barrier considerably and gives retail partners a promotional hook for TPR events and digital couponing aligned with the film's December 18 opening.
Dubitsky framed the collaboration as a natural brand-culture fit. "A company called happy collaborating with a movie called Doomsday felt too perfect to pass up," he said. "Great films like this create anticipation, participation, connection, and, ultimately, joy. That's the business we're in too."
