Cheetos is rolling out a limited-edition flavor designed to capitalize on Halloween's spooky season: Sweet Phantom Heat Puffs, hitting shelves August 31. The flavor aims to deliver what the brand describes as a "multi-sensory snacking experience" with layered sensations of heat, tingling, numbing, and a subtle fizz. The puffs are made without artificial colors or flavors and are inspired by compounds found in Sichuan pepper, which interact with sensory nerves to create the distinctive tingle-and-numb sensation.
Product rollout Sweet Phantom Heat Puffs will be available in 8.0oz and 2.5oz sizes at retailers nationwide starting August 31. A three-pack bundle is available exclusively on TikTok Shop. For consumers who find the multi-sensory experience too intense, Cheetos is also launching two additional Halloween-themed flavors on September 14: Bag of Bones White Cheddar and Bag of Bones Cinnamon Sugar.
The marketing angle According to a 2026 study from Food Quality and Preference, stress and fear increase desires for spicy foods—a positioning Cheetos is leaning into for the holiday. "Cheetos and Halloween have always shared a spirit of playful mischief, and every year we look for new ways to surprise fans with unexpected snacking experiences," said Jess Spaulding, SVP of Marketing, PepsiCo Foods U.S. "With Cheetos Sweet Phantom Heat Puffs, we've created a first-of-its-kind flavor that's layered with sweetness, heat, and a unique tingling sensation. It's an experience designed to keep fans guessing with every bite and delivers the irreverent twist they've come to expect from Cheetos."
Why it matters Limited-edition seasonal flavors have become a key growth driver for snack brands, particularly during high-emotion holidays like Halloween. The Sichuan pepper-inspired sensory component signals Cheetos' effort to differentiate in a crowded better-for-you snacking space while maintaining its playful brand identity.
