New Leadership, New Capacity
Bauducco, the Brazilian baked goods brand that commands an 86% value share in the U.S. panettone category, has appointed Jean-Pierre Comte as Chief Executive Officer, North America, effective immediately. The hire signals a deliberate push to convert the brand's dominant niche position into broader shelf presence across conventional grocery, mass, and club channels.
Comte arrives with a resume built for exactly that kind of scale play. Most recently President of Rana Meal Solutions, where he oversaw U.S. and Canadian operations, he also spent nearly a decade at Barilla leading the entire Americas region across multiple countries and brands — experience that maps directly onto the multi-channel distribution challenges facing an import-heavy baked goods label trying to grow domestic velocity. Earlier tenure at Procter & Gamble rounds out a track record in brand building, customer management, and portfolio innovation that incoming global CEO Stefano Mozzi described as "fundamental to accelerating Bauducco's expansion in an increasingly competitive U.S. market."
Manufacturing Muscle Behind the Hire
The executive appointment is timed to coincide with a significant capital commitment: Bauducco's recently opened manufacturing facility in Zephyrhills, Florida spans 160,000 square feet and is projected to employ more than 600 workers at full production. Critically, the plant enables domestic production of panettone — a category Bauducco has historically served via imports — for the first time. That shift reduces landed cost, shortens replenishment lead times, and gives the brand the supply chain flexibility to participate in TPR programs and promotional floor stacks that retailers increasingly require from seasonal baked goods suppliers.
For category managers in the bakery and seasonal aisle, the operational upgrade matters as much as the leadership news. Bauducco already carries national distribution across most major retailers, with its panettone, wafers, cookies, and toasts earning planogram space in conventional grocery and mass accounts. Domestically produced SKUs should improve fill rates during the fourth-quarter selling window — historically the brand's highest-velocity period — and create runway for planogram expansion into non-seasonal sets.
Category Position and Competitive Context
Bauducco's 86% value share in U.S. panettone is a defensible moat, but the broader imported baked goods segment is attracting attention from European private label programs and specialty-channel own-brands looking to trade up holiday shoppers. The wafer segment presents a different competitive picture: Bauducco holds the national brand leadership position, but faces ongoing pressure from store brand alternatives as retailers invest in private label bakery and snack programs.
Comte's appointment under the newly restructured Pandatura Group — the parent entity that now also houses Casa Bauducco, Visconti, and Tommy brands under Mozzi's global CEO mandate — suggests the company is building the organizational infrastructure to manage a multi-brand, multi-channel North American portfolio rather than a single-SKU import play. For buyers and category management teams at retail, that means a more sophisticated trade partner capable of joint business planning across a wider assortment.
Bauducco has operated in the U.S. for more than 20 years and exports to more than 50 countries globally, giving Comte an established retail relationship base to work from as he pursues the next phase of distribution expansion.
